About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Staff Data Engineer to join our Marketplaces DNA team at Airbnb. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the data infrastructure that powers our core marketplace features, including Users, Listings, and Marketplaces. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and architectures that support our web and native applications used by hundreds of millions of guests and hosts worldwide. Your expertise will enable the team to leverage large-scale datasets effectively, driving insights and powering machine learning models that enhance user experiences. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence how data is integrated into Airbnb’s products and to collaborate across multiple teams to build robust, high-performance data solutions that push the boundaries of latency and volume.

Qualifications
- 12+ years of industry experience in data engineering, software engineering, or related fields
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent; PhD preferred with 9+ years of experience
- Proven experience designing and deploying high-performance, scalable data systems
- Strong knowledge of relational databases and proficiency in SQL
- Expertise in programming languages such as Java, Scala, and Spark
- Experience working with petabyte-scale data architectures and pipelines
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams including client, backend, ML, analytics, and business partners
- Experience with data governance, monitoring, and logging practices
Responsibilities
- Develop and automate large-scale batch and streaming data processing systems to support Airbnb’s Guest and Host products, machine learning models, and business insights
- Partner with infrastructure teams to enhance scalability, data governance, and system efficiency
- Promote best practices in software engineering to ensure high-quality, reliable, and maintainable data infrastructure and pipelines
- Design and optimize data models for storage efficiency and clarity, ensuring they meet critical product and business needs
- Collaborate with product, data science, and engineering teams to understand business requirements and translate them into scalable data solutions
- Lead efforts to improve data quality, consistency, and accessibility across the organization
- Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines, ensuring high performance and minimal downtime
- Contribute to the development of data standards, documentation, and best practices across teams
