About the role

About The Company
Lob was founded in 2013 by technical co-founders with a vision to connect the world one mailbox at a time. Today, we’re transforming the way businesses use direct mail and bringing the power of technology to a traditionally manual channel. Our modern logistics and fulfillment engine helps businesses to build and scale high‑quality, personalized direct mail programs without the operational burden. As we grow to meet the evolving needs of our customers and expand our product offerings, we’re building a team to shape the future of direct mail.
About The Role
We’re seeking an experienced Staff Data Engineer to lead the design and buildout of Lob’s next‑generation unified event tracking platform. The consolidated platform will feed a diverse set of use cases, including both customer‑facing analytics and internal operational mail tracking. You will collaborate with colleagues across Data, Engineering, and Product teams to design the new platform and lead the transition from legacy systems. Your role will involve coaching and mentoring engineers, raising the standards for trustworthiness across the data ecosystem, and ensuring the platform’s robustness and scalability.
Some projects to get excited about include collaborating with cross-functional teams to unify Lob’s foundational data ecosystem, enabling the development of internal and external data products, creating modular and reusable frameworks for event publishing, implementing comprehensive monitoring and alerting systems, and applying software development best practices to maintain a reliable platform. You will also partner with the Engineering Manager to set the Data team’s roadmap, define processes, and mentor mid-level engineers on technical best practices and problem-solving techniques.

  • Expertise in Cloud Data Warehousing (Snowflake preferred, Redshift a plus)
  • Strong experience with streaming data processing systems such as Kafka and Apache Flink
  • Proficiency in modern software development fundamentals including APIs, version control, containerization, and CICD pipelines
  • Experience with various database types, including transactional databases (PostgreSQL preferred), document, or vector databases (like Elasticsearch)
  • Familiarity with dbt (data build tool)
  • Experience with pipeline orchestration engines such as Apache Airflow or Prefect
  • Knowledge of Change Data Capture (CDC) patterns and methods
  • Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities
  • Ability to make decisions and adapt in ambiguous situations
  • Experience with AI-assisted coding tools like ClaudeCode or Cursor
  • Proficiency with project management tools such as Jira

Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for data products and systems
  • Advise stakeholders on data constraints and assumptions within the unified data platform
  • Deprecate outdated legacy systems without disrupting core functionalities for end users
  • Monitor cloud and SaaS expenditures, identify unusual spikes, and seek cost-saving opportunities
  • Participate in on-call rotations, triaging and resolving alerts promptly
  • Collaborate with other senior engineers to align decision-making and execute strategic initiatives
  • Design and implement scalable, reliable data pipelines and frameworks
  • Lead efforts to unify and optimize Lob’s data ecosystem to support diverse use cases
  • Mentor and coach team members to elevate technical standards and problem-solving skills
  • Ensure data platform health through monitoring, alerting, and proactive maintenance
  • Coordinate cross-team projects to achieve strategic goals and improve data infrastructure

Benefits
  • Competitive base salary plus RSUs
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans
  • Flexible remote work options across multiple states
  • Generous paid time off and holidays
