About The Role
The Principal Cybersecurity Engineer - Embedded Systems at GE Vernova will play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing cybersecurity solutions for operational technology (OT) within industrial control systems (ICS). This leadership position involves architecting, implementing, and testing cybersecurity measures to safeguard critical infrastructure against emerging threats. The successful candidate will lead multimillion-dollar research and development programs, collaborate with government agencies such as the Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Energy (DOE), and foster strategic partnerships with universities, national laboratories, and industry collaborators. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to influence the future of embedded cybersecurity technology, contribute to high-impact projects, and drive innovation in energy and national security sectors. The position requires a strategic thinker with a strong technical background, proven leadership skills, and a passion for advancing cybersecurity in complex industrial environments.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with at least 10 years of industry experience, or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 13 years, or a Bachelor’s degree with at least 15 years of relevant experience. Proven success in writing winning proposals for U.S. government agencies such as DOE, ARPA-e, CESER, DOD, and DARPA is essential, demonstrating a strong track record of securing research funding. Candidates should have extensive experience in embedded systems software development, including computer architecture, Linux operating systems, network protocols, and Linux security, including driver development. Knowledge of cryptographic algorithms, protocols such as TLS and X.509, and hardware-based security techniques like HSM, TPM, ARM TrustZone, and Secure Boot is required. A deep understanding of industrial protocols such as Modbus/TCP, DNP3, IEC standards, and OT network design principles is highly desirable. The candidate must also be familiar with OT security standards including IEC 62443, NERC CIP, and NIST 800-82, and possess embedded programming skills in C/C++, Python, and experience with real-time operating systems like VxWorks or QNX. U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance are mandatory for this role.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of advanced research initiatives in OT cybersecurity, securing external funding through proposal writing and collaboration with government agencies such as DOD and DOE.
  • Serve as principal investigator and technical expert for proposals and projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and technological innovation.
  • Collaborate with academic institutions, national laboratories, industry consortia, and commercial partners to advance the state of the art in embedded systems cybersecurity.
  • Manage and lead multi-million-dollar R&D projects, driving technology innovation from concept to field-ready prototypes.
  • Develop and execute technology roadmaps in coordination with GE business units, translating research outcomes into market-ready products.
  • Publish research findings in technical journals, file patents, and contribute to open-source communities to foster innovation and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay abreast of emerging cybersecurity threats, industry standards, and technological advancements to ensure GE Vernova remains at the forefront of embedded cybersecurity solutions.
