West Kern Environmental Consulting, LLC.
West Kern Environmental Consulting (WKEC) is an environmental consulting company in Bakersfield, CA. We provide endangered species services in and around Kern County since 2010.
We are hiring seasonal biologists (now – September 30, 2026) to assist in endangered species field surveys.
Seasonal Biologist Tasks
The primary focus will be performing protocol level blunt nosed leopard lizard surveys. Training will be provided on survey techniques and the identification of species. These are walking transect surveys over uneven terrain in remote areas with small teams under supervision. Seasonal biologists are expected to observe and record a variety of plant and animal species as instructed by their supervisor. Seasonal biologists will be required to prepare all equipment for the following days surveys; fuel vehicles, clean and fill ice chests and water jugs, clean vehicles of trash and dust, and take company vehicles to car wash as needed. Recording mileage and hours daily with WKEC time tracking app.
Schedule
Schedule and location will vary from day to day. Typical schedule is 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, with the chance for overtime. Due to weather or scheduling, there may be weeks where seasonal biologists get less than 40 hours. Transportation to work location will be determined prior to the day’s work, ride sharing from Bakersfield or meeting on location as necessary.

Seasonal employees are expected to provide their own steel toed boots, binoculars, camelback or water bottle, and additional flame-resistant clothing as desired.
Qualifications
Seasonal biologists are required to have a valid California driver’s license, pass a pre-employment drug test, 18 years of age and High School graduate. A cell phone and reliable transportation are also required.
Well qualified seasonal biologists will have or be in the process of earning a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field. Experience with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, handheld GPS units is a plus. The ability to work in a group as well as independently.
Compensation
