Job Summary:
CalPERS is seeking a highly skilled Senior Programmer / Application Developer to support and enhance its Actuarial Valuation System (AVS). This role involves a combination of application support, maintenance, defect resolution, and new feature development in a mission-critical system supporting actuarial operations.
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on developer with strong experience in enterprise application support environments, capable of working closely with business stakeholders and technical teams.

Application Support & Maintenance
- Monitor system performance, availability, and data integrity
- Troubleshoot and resolve defects, errors, and user issues
- Apply patches, updates, and security fixes
- Support data imports, exports, and backups
Development & Enhancements
- Analyze business requirements and propose design solutions
- Develop, test, and deploy enhancements, reports, and interfaces
- Ensure high-quality code with proper QA/testing practices
- Support CI/CD pipelines and code repositories
Collaboration & Communication
- Work with actuaries, business analysts, and IT teams
- Participate in requirement gathering and change management processes
- Provide technical guidance and end-user support
Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
- Maintain detailed technical documentation
- Develop user guides, FAQs, and training materials
- Conduct knowledge transfer sessions and cross-training
Deliverables:
- Analysis & design documentation
- Application enhancements and fixes
- Testing artifacts (test cases, results, QA validation)
- Knowledge transfer documentation and sessions
- Ongoing status reports and project documentation
Required Skills & Experience:
Mandatory
- Strong experience as a Senior Application Developer / Programmer
- Hands-on experience in:
- Application support & maintenance
- Debugging and performance tuning
- Full SDLC (design, development, testing, deployment)
- Experience working on enterprise or data-intensive systems
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
Preferred:
- Experience in actuarial, financial, or pension systems
- Familiarity with:
- CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins)
- Version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Experience in government or public sector environments
