About the role

Summary
The Accountant position serves the Portland VA Medical Center - Portland Campus - in Fiscal Service - Accounting section. The incumbent performs technician level work in direct support of budget - accounting - auditing - fiscal - and/or financial management function.
Duties
  • Duties include but are not limited to: The incumbent plays a key role by advising and assisting with accounting and financial management matters for Management Officials - Research Investigators (MD and/or PhD level) - Research Biomedical Engineers and Statisticians within the service
  • The incumbent handles the majority of administrative and management concerns for these individuals and their staff - while proactively identifying potential problems and offering recommended solutions
  • This support enhances the efficiency - productivity - and cost-effectiveness of research and development activities
  • Perform financial reporting related to management - including grant - cost - and project accounting
  • Oversee the daily operations of the VAPORHCS Research and Development accounting system using internal and external sub ledgers and reporting systems
  • Examine accounting transaction listings - cost reports - financial statements - project fund balances - and work orders daily to ensure data accuracy and completeness
  • Review and analyze procedures related to receiving - validating - and recording accounting transactions affecting asset - liability - expense - and revenue accounts
  • Evaluate general ledger account balances and analyze subsidiary ledgers for data integrity - conducting research and reconciliations as needed
  • Develop and maintain reports and databases to track funding changes over multiple fiscal years and multi-year funding timelines
  • Reconcile data between separate databases - sub ledgers - and the central accounting system to produce accurate financial reports
  • Analyze existing accounting and budget systems to resolve complex problems
  • Apply established accounting and budgeting principles to devise solutions for regulatory or operational challenges
  • Revise or implement accounting and budget systems or operating procedures as needed
  • Examine accounting transaction listings - cost reports - financial statements - project fund balances - and work orders daily to ensure data accuracy and completeness
  • Develop and maintain reports and databases to track funding changes over multiple fiscal years and multi-year funding timelines
  • Revise or implement accounting and budget systems or operating procedures as needed

  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday
