Description The Technician I position is an entry-level role within the Department of Public Works. The Technician I will perform general unskilled manual work of a routine nature. The duties require physical vigor. Handling of solid waste
Cutting and trimming grass, trees and performing other landscape maintenance including seasonal leaf removal
Assist in the repair, patching, or maintenance of streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutter, storm and sanitary sewers, manholes, and water mains
Assist with snow and ice removal from town property; applies sand and/or salt to town property areas
Assist in the repairs of water and sewer lines, and with water meter installations when needed
Assist with town events
General maintenance of parks and Public Works shop(s)
Assist with Town emergencies and is available for call-out on Town emergencies
Clean, maintain, and properly store tools and equipment
Work safely, following safety rules and training, wear proper uniform attire and personal protective gear when required, maintain clean and safe work environment
Performs related duties and responsibilities as required

Possession of a High School diploma or GED
Possession of valid Maryland driver’s license
Flagger Certification within 1 year
Ability to work as a member of a team
Ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions
Technical Qualifications
Knowledge of facility, equipment, and grounds maintenance repair programs and repair techniques
Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner
Ability to accomplish tasks quickly in a fast-paced environment
Language Skills Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with private contractors, consulting engineers, utility companies, property owners, government officials, the public, fellow employees and Town officials. Must be able to listen and interpret problems, direct inquiries to appropriate staff or resources, exercise tact and diplomacy, and make clear written and oral reports and recommendations. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see. The employee is frequently required to stand and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls. The employee is occasionally required to walk; reach with hands and arms; balance; and stoop, kneel or crouch. Work requires some physical dexterity which may include standing for long periods of time, walking over rough, uneven surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping and reaching. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to or in excess seventy-five (75) pounds. Occasionally required to work unusual hours. Environmental Conditions The worker is subject to outdoor environmental conditions. Unpleasantness such as a high level of noise, dust, grease, and mud; cold/hot and/or wet/snowy weather.
