ABOUT TOBY (www.toby.health) TOBY profiles Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in urine using spectroscopy and AI to detect disease early. Our goal is to build diagnostics that are noninvasive, affordable, and scalable. WHY TOBY At TOBY you will help build a new class of diagnostics capable of detecting disease from a simple urine sample. You will own the science from day one and work at the frontier of AI-enabled diagnostics, applying advanced machine learning to real clinical data and translating discoveries into products designed for clinical use and regulatory approval. Work with one of the largest clinical VOC datasets assembled for disease detection. THE ROLE We need the person who does the work. You run the models, analyze the data, write the papers and regulatory submissions, and build AI tools that make everything faster. This is not a management role. You are the engine of the models. WHAT YOU WILL DO
Build ML models for disease detection from VOC spectroscopy data
Design model architectures and training pipelines
Analyze high-dimensional and complex biological datasets
Write first-author scientific papers and FDA / CLIA regulatory submissions
Build AI and agentic workflows that accelerate research and company operations
REQUIREMENTS
Academic ML Experience: PhD or higher in machine learning; Strong record of first-author peer-reviewed publications; Deep expertise in machine learning and deep learning
Regulatory ML Experience: Experience working in CLIA, FDA, or other regulated environments; Experience contributing to and writing regulatory submissions involving ML models
AI Native: Heavy user of frontier models for coding, analysis, and scientific writing; Ability to build agentic workflows that automate research and internal processes
Domain Familiarity: Bioinformatics; Computational biology; Mass Spectrometry
CULTURE This is a startup. The team will be small, highly capable, and work with urgency. We expect intensity, ownership, and a bias toward building. Your role will be to help TOBY (a) revolutionize healthcare and (b) shape an entire new branch of science. -
