Oceanography (OCEANO) Officers, also known as METOC, are Navy geophysical experts specializing in meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and related fields.
Their mission is to support fleet and joint operations by collecting, analyzing, and disseminating environmental data to ensure navigation safety, operational freedom, and force lethality.
Officers lead teams of 3-400 personnel in diverse settings, serving at sea on vessels or ashore at research centers, forecast hubs, and headquarters worldwide.
Training includes the Basic Oceanography Accession Training, Information Warfare Basic Course, and advanced education at the Naval Postgraduate School.
Qualifications require a technical bachelor's degree, calculus and physics coursework, U.S. citizenship, security clearance eligibility, and physical standards.
