Chief Physician Assistant (PA) – Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery The Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery is seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Physician Assistant (PA) to lead our PA team and play a critical role in advancing clinical excellence and operational performance. This leadership position combines clinical expertise with administrative oversight, ensuring the highest standards of patient care while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment. The Chief PA will partner closely with Physician Leadership to drive quality outcomes and support the continued growth of the thoracic surgery program. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Administration
Provide strategic leadership and supervision of Physician Assistants within Thoracic Surgery
Oversee staffing, scheduling, and daily operations to ensure seamless clinical coverage
Lead recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention initiatives
Conduct performance evaluations and support professional growth and development
Assist with payroll, budgeting, and resource allocation
Serve as a key liaison among PAs, physicians, nursing, and administrative leadership
Clinical Oversight
Ensure delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care across all clinical settings
Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care
Monitor clinical performance, patient outcomes, and satisfaction metrics
Support the development and implementation of clinical protocols and care pathways
Education & Program Development
Design and maintain PA orientation, training, and competency programs
Mentor PAs and support ongoing education and clinical skill advancement
Participate in departmental initiatives, research, and quality improvement efforts
Compliance & Quality
Ensure adherence to institutional policies and regulatory standards (e.g., JCAHO, NYS DOH)
Support audit readiness and accreditation requirements
Oversee documentation quality and reporting standards
Clinical Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including histories and physical exams
Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Assist in thoracic surgical procedures and provide perioperative care
Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians
Perform advanced procedures (as credentialed), including line placement and chest tube insertion
Respond to emergencies and deliver life-saving interventions as needed
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program
NCCPA certification required
Active New York State PA license (or eligibility)
A minimum 5 years of clinical thoracic or surgical experience
Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
Current BLS and ACLS certifications
Strong leadership, clinical judgment, and communication skills
