About Mentor A Promise
Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Our technology initiatives help connect youth and families to mentorship, education, and resources in innovative ways.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Volunteer UX/UI Designer to support the development of digital tools that advance MAP’s mission. This is an unpaid, educational volunteer role intended for individuals who wish to gain nonprofit and product design experience while contributing to a social impact organization.
Important Note for Students on OPT
  • Volunteer/unpaid roles are permissible for nonprofit organizations if approved by your Designated School Official (DSO).
  • To remain in compliance, OPT participants must ensure this role is directly related to their major field of study and meets federal requirements.
  • STEM OPT participants should note that unpaid volunteer roles do not qualify under current USCIS guidance.
  • MAP will provide documentation of duties and hours upon request.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in designing user flows, wireframes, and prototypes for mission-aligned digital products
  • Collaborate with MAP’s product and technology teams to improve user experiences
  • Translate complex ideas into intuitive, accessible design solutions
  • Participate in feedback and iteration cycles to refine products

Requirements
  • Portfolio showing product or UX/UI design work
  • Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Interest in nonprofit technology and mission-driven design

Commitment
  • Volunteer role, 5-10 hours/week
  • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
  • Flexible schedule; fully remote
