Job Description
MDS Engineering is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our growing MEP consulting team in York, PA. This is a senior leadership role for an experienced mechanical engineer who is ready to help set the technical, strategic, and operational direction of our mechanical engineering discipline.
MDS Engineering is a growing, minority and woman owned MEP consulting firm with a reputation for delivering innovative solutions across building systems, infrastructure, and energy. We serve clients in healthcare, higher education, laboratories, government, and mission critical sectors.
The Principal Mechanical Engineer will lead high profile projects, provide firmwide mechanical engineering oversight, mentor future leaders, strengthen design standards, support business development, and help advance sustainable design, decarbonization, and energy efficient solutions.
This position represents the highest technical tier within mechanical engineering and provides a direct pathway toward executive leadership opportunities within MDS Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the mechanical engineering discipline’s technical strategy, staffing approach, project delivery standards, and overall design quality.
• Oversee mechanical systems design for HVAC, plumbing, and energy systems across complex projects.
• Establish and improve firmwide standards for mechanical design, documentation, energy modeling, calculations, specifications, and quality assurance.
• Advance the adoption of sustainable design practices, decarbonization strategies, thermal storage, performance simulation, and energy efficient building systems.
• Drive LEED, WELL, Net Zero, and other sustainability focused design initiatives across projects.
• Mentor senior engineers, junior staff, designers, and emerging leaders within the mechanical discipline.
• Build and maintain long term client relationships while contributing to business development, proposal strategy, technical presentations, and pursuit efforts.
• Represent MDS Engineering through professional associations, industry boards, conferences, technical leadership, and thought leadership opportunities.
• Collaborate with architects, owners, contractors, electrical engineers, plumbing designers, internal leadership, and external project partners.
• Support firmwide growth by improving technical processes, strengthening QA/QC practices, and helping develop future leaders within the organization.
Qualifications
• 15 to 20+ years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering design and leadership.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required. MBA preferred.
• Active Professional Engineer license required.
• Additional credentials such as LEED AP, CEM, or PMP are strongly preferred.
• Strong portfolio of mechanical design leadership across large scale, complex projects.
• Proven experience in team leadership, business development, client engagement, and project execution.
• Expertise in HVAC, plumbing, energy efficient systems, and sustainable building design.
• Familiarity with sustainability frameworks such as LEED, WELL, Net Zero, energy modeling, and decarbonization strategies.
• Ability to lead technical teams, mentor staff, manage priorities, and represent the firm with clients and industry partners.
• Strong communication, leadership, organization, and problem solving skills.
