Cloud Systems Engineer Duration: 6-12 Month Contract-to-Hire Location: Remote (preference for east or central coast) Reports to: Director of IT System Engineering Job Overview: Our client is looking for a Cloud Systems Engineer who thrives at the intersection of infrastructure, security, and innovation. You'll be the hands-on expert shaping how their organization runs on Microsoft Azure — designing resilient systems, driving automation, and helping move faster without compromising security or compliance. If you're energized by complex cloud challenges and love seeing your work power real business outcomes, this role is built for you. WHAT YOU'LL BUILD & OPERATE
Own the Azure environment end-to-end
Design, deploy, and manage IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS workloads — from Virtual Machines and Scale Sets to Storage accounts (Blob, File, Queue, Table) — keeping production running smoothly.
Be the incident response anchor
Lead technical triage and root cause analysis for production issues. Your work directly protects the reliability that the business depends on.
Drive observability and cost intelligence
Build monitoring and alerting with Azure Monitor and Log Analytics. Spot performance and capacity risks before they become incidents, and champion cloud cost optimization.
SECURITY & COMPLIANCE IMPACT
Implement Zero Trust from the ground up
Design and enforce cloud security controls, RBAC policies, managed identities, and CI/CD integration — not as an afterthought, but as a first-class part of how they build.
Own secrets and certificate lifecycle
Design and manage Azure Key Vault for secrets, keys, and certificates — keeping sensitive material protected across every environment.
Power audit readiness for SOC 2, ISO, HIPAA, and PCI
Partner with security teams with solid technical evidence — turning audit prep from a scramble into a smooth, repeatable process.
AUTOMATION & ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE
Make infrastructure reproducible
Maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (ARM, Bicep, or Terraform) and manage version-controlled deployment workflows. Manual work gets automated; standards get documented.
Shape emerging platform capabilities
Collaborate on Microsoft Fabric data and analytics initiatives, and help onboard and govern Azure AI Foundry resources — a rare opportunity to work at the frontier of enterprise AI infrastructure.
WHAT YOU BRING Required:
5+ years in infrastructure, systems, or cloud engineering
3+ years of hands-on Azure experience
Strong networking and identity fundamentals
Proficiency in PowerShell, Python, or Bash
Nice to have:
Azure certifications (AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-500)
Hybrid cloud experience
Expertise with Microsoft Entra ID
Familiarity with AI/Gen AI ethics and governance
HOW YOU WORK
Security-first mindset
Strong problem-solving instincts
Clear communicator across technical and business teams
