We are stewards of the James Howe House, known as the oldest-standing house once owned by a formerly-enslaved person in the region of Montclair, NJ—and maybe beyond. Our vision is to empower New Jerseyans with knowledge about our shared legacy as the Slave State of the North. Our mission is to protect and uplift the house as a tangible reminder of the true history of slavery and its aftermath.
