About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role focuses on designing and optimizing piping and mechanical systems within process-control environments that handle liquids or gases. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in fluid dynamics, equipment specification, and structural analysis, enabling them to lead innovative system design initiatives with minimal supervision. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring that projects meet operational, regulatory, and safety standards from conception through to final implementation. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work on complex projects in a regulated industry, contributing to the advancement of nuclear energy solutions and supporting the company's mission of delivering safe and efficient energy systems.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and certifications in project management or quality assurance are advantageous but not mandatory. A minimum of five years of mechanical design experience, specifically focusing on piping and fluid systems in industrial liquid or gas processes, is required. Demonstrated expertise in pressure-drop calculations, fluid-flow optimization, and equipment sizing and selection is essential. Proficiency in static and dynamic piping analyses, including pipe-stress and support-structure calculations, is also necessary. Prior experience working within highly regulated or process-driven industries such as nuclear, chemical processing, oil and gas, or HVAC is highly desirable. Familiarity with relevant codes and standards, particularly ASME or equivalent, and the ability to incorporate them into efficient designs are important. Strong knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science is expected. Additionally, candidates must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance, which is vital for working within secure and regulated environments.
Responsibilities
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for leading the design, construction, and maintenance of facility piping systems. This includes rigorous component sizing, equipment selection such as pumps, motors, heaters, blowers, and valves, and ensuring optimal system performance. The role involves modeling pressure, flow, and thermal effects using CFD, FEA, and related simulation tools to validate piping integrity under static and dynamic loads. Developing, reviewing, and red-lining mechanical and piping drawings, plans, and specifications derived from engineering calculations is a core function, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. The engineer will plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work for major projects or moderate scope projects, preparing rough order of magnitude (ROM) and detailed cost estimates, equipment specifications, and procurement documentation. Active participation in safety reviews, quality assurance activities, training sessions, and regulatory audits is expected, with a focus on continuous improvement through the integration of emerging technologies and best practices. The role also involves producing technical reports, literature reviews, and progress updates, and presenting findings to stakeholders and senior management. Mentoring junior engineers and supporting troubleshooting efforts are additional responsibilities. The engineer will perform related tasks as assigned to support project success and operational excellence.
