The Applied Intelligence for Discovery (AI4D) team is a newly formed group within Lilly Research Laboratories that operates at the intersection of scientific delivery and core platform development. AI4D’s mission is to connect scientists to petabyte-scale data through natural language interfaces, automated analysis workflows, and intelligent search — and to convert early deployments into repeatable system standards and evaluation practices that scale across therapeutic areas.

The Forward Deployed AI Engineer is the connective tissue between what AI can do and what discovery scientists need it to do. You will embed directly with research teams across therapeutic areas translating real-world data, infrastructure, and scientific constraints into production systems that collapse the time from question to answer from days or weeks to minutes. You will measure success through production adoption, measurable workflow impact, and eval-driven feedback loops that inform platform and model roadmaps. Key Responsibilities

**Basic Qualifications**

Basic Requirements

Innovation Scouting & Technology Integration

**Minimum Requirements**

Required Education:

- PhD or Master’s in Chemistry or related field.

- 3 patents or patent applications demonstrating scientific leadership in oligonucleotide therapeutics.

- Design and implement data models, schemas, and ontologies for chemical, biological, and automation-generated data that serve discovery workflows across the portfolio.

- Implement semantic data standards (RDF, OWL, SPARQL) and ontology engineering practices to create interoperable, machine-readable scientific data.

**Data Platform & Lakehouse Architecture**

- Design and implement data lakehouse architecture using modern platforms (Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent), including data storage patterns, partitioning strategies, and query optimization.

- Build and optimize ETL/ELT pipelines using Spark, dbt, or similar tools to transform raw scientific data into analytical and ML-ready formats.

**Knowledge Graph & Specialized Data Systems**

- Design and implement knowledge graphs (Neo4j, Amazon Neptune, TigerGraph) that capture molecular, target, pathway, and experimental relationships across the discovery landscape.

- Architect specialized data solutions: array databases (TileDB) for genomics/imaging, document stores (MongoDB) for experimental records, and vector databases for embedding-based retrieval supporting ML and RAG workflows.

**Cross-Functional Partnership**

- Partner with scientific software engineers to ensure data architectures are implementable, performant, and well-documented.

Basic Requirements
