**Description**

The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) seeks a Curatorial Fellow to support activities related to the museum’s Jewish Arts Initiative. This project seeks to highlight the global diversity of Jewish artistic expression and heritage from antiquity to the present, commensurate with the quality and breadth of the museum’s collection. The scope of the initiative includes research, interpretation, acquisition and loan activity, gallery installations, special exhibitions, publications, scholarly and public programs, conservation, and digital initiatives that reach worldwide audiences.

The part-time, one-year position (with the possibility of renewal for two additional years) is intended for candidates wishing to pursue a museum career; it provides experience in conducting research at a major encyclopedic museum. The successful candidate will provide curatorial and administrative support to curators working on projects relating to Jewish arts and culture, including exhibitions, scholarly and public programs, and prospective acquisitions of Jewish ceremonial art and objects related to the Jewish faith.

The Curatorial Fellow will support and collaborate with the Curator of African Art and other curators in fulfilling the vision for the museum’s Jewish Arts Initiative. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, support for a current research project related to Jewish artistic expression across the African continent as well as support for other curatorial projects including those relating to synagogues in Eastern Europe and other aspects of Jewish art and culture. The incumbent will have the opportunity to hone skills in research, writing, and public speaking.

As a member of the curatorial staff, the Curatorial Fellow is expected to work closely and collegially with others to fulfill the mission of the museum and to maintain the highest professional standards of scholarship, connoisseurship, and professional practices in the field.

**Responsibilities**

- Works under the direction of Curatorial and other members of staff to achieve the mission of the institution and to implement its strategic objectives.

- Works under the direction of Curatorial staff and in concert with Conservation, Collections Management, and Design to ensure that works of art are properly conserved, documented, stored, and displayed for the enjoyment and education of the public.

- Conducts research to develop exhibitions and public programs, enrich the collection database, and create didactic materials.

- Assists with the organization and/or coordination of special exhibitions.

- Assists curatorial staff in the art acquisition process; helps to assemble all required supporting documentation, including provenance, historical and aesthetic significance of the object, context within the collection, discussion of price, and state of conservation.

- Assists curatorial staff in the development of gallery didactics, both print and digital, and, with curatorial and Public and Academic Engagement staff, on the development of public programs.

- May participate in events organized for the museum’s members, constituent groups such as the Board of Trustees, Women’s Council, Donors’ Circle, and affinity groups. May attend events with cultural heritage community groups or members.

- Performs other duties as assigned by the Curator.

**Requirements And Key Competencies**

M.A. in art history or history or currently be pursuing the same, or another post-graduate degree in a related field such as religion or cultural heritage with a focus on the visual arts.

Possess a broad familiarity with the history of Judaism and Jewish cultures, rituals, and ceremonial arts. Candidate should ideally possess working knowledge of other visual cultures in Africa and/or Eastern Europe.

Excellent research and written and verbal communication skills are essential. Proficiency in at least one foreign language (such as Hebrew, Arabic, French, or Ukrainian) is desired.

Proficiency in commonly used office software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with a collections management system preferred.

Possess excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail, as well as the ability to prioritize projects and adhere to deadlines.

Curatorial Fellow for Jewish Arts Initiatives

The Cleveland Museum of Art seeks a highly motivated, energetic individual with strong organizational skills to join the curatorial team as a Curatorial Assistant. The successful candidate will serve a two year term, renewable for a third year. The Curatorial Assistant will work in the department of Prints, Drawings, and Photography, providing support to the Curator of Photography and the Curators of Prints and Drawings.

Applicants should have an interest in working at an encyclopedic art museum and particular interest in the areas of specialization mentioned above. This term-limited position will provide the incumbent with administrative experience working in an art museum, as well as experience assisting in curatorial processes such as the organization of exhibitions, acquisition and lending of artworks, and data management (both in digital and analog/paper formats). The successful candidate will be responsible for administrative tasks such as making business travel arrangements for curators, tracking and coding expenses, and keeping track of multiple budgets and calendars. Additional tasks include requesting and coordinating art movement, visitor registration, and photography. The incumbent will respond to inquiries about the collection and may assist members of the public visiting the art study room to examine works of art. Depending on the level of experience and interests of the incumbent, they may be asked to enhance data in the collections management system by conducting research or writing texts for gallery didactics, gallery guides, the Members Magazine, Thinker blog, museum website, etc. The successful candidate will participate in monthly Curatorial and Departmental meetings, quarterly meetings that address the care of the collection, as well as Curatorial Assistants meetings, and meetings regarding installations in the galleries and special exhibitions.

The museum is seeking candidates who are interested in exploring the possibility of a career in an art museum. Candidates who have demonstrated good organizational skills and experience working on several projects simultaneously, who communicate clearly and are comfortable asking questions, and who collaborate effectively as part of a team are preferred. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse Museum constituents. The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information is expected. A Bachelor’s degree in art history or a related field (e.g., history, classics, anthropology) is required; a Master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred. The incumbent should have strong knowledge of art history plus experience working with databases. The prospective applicant must be comfortable with or able to learn Microsoft Teams and Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), as well as the museum’s internal CMS (collection management system). Fluency or proficiency in another language (such as French, German, Italian, Latin, or Spanish) is a plus, as is experience with handling works of art or rare documents.

The full-time, limited term (3-year) position is intended for candidates wishing to pursue a museum career; it provides comprehensive experience working at a major encyclopedic museum across the full range of museum activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the care, research, gallery display, digital presentation, and development of the museum’s holdings of Jewish ceremonial art and objects related to the Jewish faith.

The Assistant Curator will support and collaborate with the Curator of Decorative Arts in fulfilling the vision for the museum’s Jewish Arts Initiative. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, writing didactic materials, assisting with and conducting independent research, supporting permanent collection gallery rotations and exhibitions, managing loans, and assisting with acquisitions. The Assistant Curator will act as a liaison for the Initiative between curators and museum professionals in the Director’s Office, Conservation, Ingalls Library and Archives, Interpretation, Exhibitions, and Design departments. An important aspect of the role will be provenance research, particularly in the context of WWII, to support multiple curatorial departments.

The Assistant Curator is involved all stages of exhibition planning and execution from conception to research, strategizing loans, writing, and collaborating with other departments on fundraising, design and installation, audience research, marketing, interpretive programming, etc.

- Works with the Curator to identify and recommend works of art for acquisition; helps to assemble all required supporting documentation, including provenance, historical and aesthetic significance of the object, context within the collection, discussion of price, and state of conservation.

- Works with Interpretation staff to develop gallery didactics, both print and digital, and receives feedback from Interpretation in a collaborative manner to ensure that didactics are accessible to general audiences. Collaborates with Public and Academic Engagement staff on the development of public programs.

- In collaboration with the Curator, installs or reinstalls aspects of the collection after developing and presenting a rationale that accords with the Strategic Plan and current procedures; works closely with Conservation, Interpretation, Design, and others to realize the reinstallation.

- In collaboration with the Curator, works with Philanthropy to identify and cultivate individual and institutional funders for diverse projects related to the permanent collection, exhibitions, and others, as needed.

- Participates in events organized for the museum’s members, constituent groups such as the Board of Trustees, Women’s Council, Donors’ Circle, and affinity groups.

- Performs other duties as assigned by the Curator.

**Requirements And Key Competencies**

M.A. in art history or history required, with a minimum of two years of relevant experience. Ph.D. preferred.

Have demonstrated experience with provenance research and knowledge of relevant databases and resources.

Have a demonstrated ability to work successfully and collaborate with others, including (but not limited to) museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Proficiency in at least one foreign language (ideally, Hebrew, German, or French) is desired.

Possess excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail, and the ability to work with databases and other routine software applications.

Assistant Curator for Jewish Arts Initiatives

The Ingalls Library is seeking a detail-oriented candidate to assist with physical processing and preservation of books in collaboration with Preservation staff. Under the guidance of seasoned professionals, the Fellow will gain experience in standards and best practices of proper handling, cleaning, and mending of library materials including rare and special collections in a variety of physical formats.

The fellowship offers essential tools and insights for any person whose career plans include preservation, technical services librarianship, and art librarianship.

This is a part-time fellowship working 20 hours per week for 9-12 months.

**Requirements**

- The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in an MLIS program with a concentration in technical services, or an advanced undergraduate (rising senior) preparing to enroll in an MLIS program, in good academic standing.

- Experience with measuring, precision work, and other hand skills. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, craftsmanship, and the ability to meet deadlines and quotas. Ability to work independently and sustain attention to detail over a long period of time and interpret complex instructions.

**Responsibilities**

- Preserving items including the construction of enclosures, pockets, book jackets, resewing, and proper handling of delicate or fragile materials

- Proper handling and care of rare materials including books with old and brittle paper, pamphlets, ephemera, artist books, and oversized materials

- Process library materials. Includes book plating, spine labeling, counting and checking status and call number in integrated library system.

- Maintain proficiency in all essential functions of integrated library system and OCLC

- Provide cross training backup.

- Provide support for Collection Development and Management Services Assistant as needed.

- Perform copy cataloging of books and non-book materials in English and all other European languages for the library utilizing national cataloging standards, including MARC, AARC2/RDA, LCSH, and LCCN

- Provide support for Serials and Electronic Resources Assistant as needed.

- Provide on-call support for circulation as needed.
