The City of Port Townsend is recruiting to fill one vacancy in Water Treatment/Distribution at either the Maintenance Worker, Operator I, or Operator II level depending on qualifications. This is a fulltime hybrid role that works part of the time in Water Distribution and part of the time at the Water Treatment Facility. JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, performs operation and maintenance of the City's potable water treatment system and performs a variety of maintenance and repair work to the City's water distribution system. Participates as a member of the Public Works team to operate and maintain the City's potable water treatment system in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory standards
Conducts water quality sampling
Collects, compiles, analyzes, and interprets water quality, source water, and operational data and produces reports
Maintains and calibrates pumps, analyzers, sensors, and other equipment associated with water treatment and monitoring
Operates and troubleshoots Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) computer systems and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
Performs routine maintenance of water treatment facility buildings, booster pump stations, reservoirs, telemetry, SCADA, mechanical and electrical equipment
Assists in the operation and maintenance of the golf course well
Responds to customer water quality concerns.
Responds to after-hours emergencies.
Troubleshoots water system problems and make repairs
Assists with preventive maintenance program of equipment in coordination with the Fleet division
Maintains water treatment grounds and facilities in a clean, safe, and efficient manner
Performs repairs to mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems and equipment
Assists with maintenance and repairs of the Olympic Gravity Water System
Provides support for other divisions and departments during emergencies
Patrols and inspects all parts of the municipal watershed, water sources, transmission facilities, and storage facilities
Monitors all natural and human-caused processes that might influence source water quality
Participates as a member of the Public Works team to maintain the City's water distribution system including pumps, pipes, hydrant, meters, reservoirs, and valves
Performs customer service for meter reading, leak repair, and installation of taps and meters
Performs small construction projects including pipe installation and replacement
Operates heavy construction equipment including backhoe, front-end loader, dump trucks, vactor truck, etc., and operates hand tools such as cutoff saws, compactors, jackhammers, etc. as qualified
Transports equipment with dump trucks and pickups with trailers
Performs minor repairs on equipment and reports the need for major repairs
Assists other departments with underground utility work
Assists with establishing and implementing appropriate safety programs for staff and equipment

Water Treatment Plant Operator 1 certification within 18 months in this position
Water Distribution Manager in Training (WDM-IT) certification within 6 months in this position

Cross Connection Control Certification within 18 months in this position
Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
Valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A" or must obtain within 12 months in this position
First Aid/CPR certification or must obtain within 12 months in this position

WORKING CONDITIONS This position requires being onsite working in an office setting, at the Water Treatment Facility, and outdoors in the field. Field work occurs during all types of weather and includes repeated walking, bending, stooping and lifting; the ability to occasionally lift up to 60 lbs.; vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected); and a full range of motor skills. This position may require working in confined spaces and climbing and working at heights up to 100 feet.
