Learns to perform field work and technical duties related to smart meter equipment, meter reading systems, customer data verification, and assists the Utility Billing Office with meter data verification, customer inquiries, and usage analysis. This is a training-level position intended to prepare the incumbent for advancement to the Maintenance II (Utility Systems Technician) classification upon demonstrated proficiency and experience. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Assists with the installation, testing, and maintenance of automated
meter reading (AMR/AMI) equipment and related communication hardware and components.
Performs basic meter reads, inspections, and troubleshooting under
direction of a senior technician.
Learns to identify and report equipment malfunctions, leaks, or
connectivity issues within the smart meter system.
Supports Utility Billing staff by assisting in data collection and
verifying meter read accuracy.
Provides courteous assistance to customers regarding meter access
and service appointments.
Maintains accurate work logs and documentation of field activities.
Qualifications
Willingness and ability to learn smart meter technology,
communication systems, and basic diagnostic tools.
Ability to operate handheld meter-reading devices and follow
software-assisted instructions.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and communicate
effectively with the public.
Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED required.
Prior experience in general maintenance, utilities, information
Technology, Or Construction Work Preferred But Not Required. Physical Requirements
Moderate to occasional heavy physical effort required. Must be able
to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs. Working Conditions
Work performed indoors and outdoors under varying weather
conditions.
Exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards requires adherence to
established safety procedures.
