Want to say your job includes kayaking, sonar mapping, and environmental protection ? Then this internship is for you! What You’ll Be Doing
Explore & Inspect: Conduct visual inspections of stormwater outfalls, ponds, and infrastructure using GPS and Cartegraph an asset management software. Learn to complete visual site inspections with use of a drone.
Paddle & Map: Use a kayak and sonar equipment to create bathymetric maps of stormwater ponds.
Protect & Educate: Assist in developing programs and outreach materials to maintain compliance with the MS4 permit.
Inspect & Communicate: Visit active construction and development sites to ensure erosion control measures are in place, working with contractors and property owners to protect water resources.
Data Collection & Management: Collect environmental water quality data, update GIS stormwater infrastructure database, and record field data.
Sample & Analyze: Collect and process water samples for a water quality monitoring program.
Support & Assist: Help the Engineering Department with customer service, document updates, and GIS mapping.
Collaborate: Work with other departments within the city including Environmental, Forestry, GIS, Public works and Engineering to support ongoing initiatives.
Who We’re Looking For
Current Student in Environmental Science, GIS, Water Resources, Engineering, or a related field.
Tech-Savvy – Comfortable using Microsoft Office, and if you know GIS, AutoCAD, or GPS software, that’s a plus!
Certification Ready – EM2001 Erosion Control certification is preferred. Preference will be given to applicants who have the certification or can get it prior to start of work.
Outdoor Enthusiast – Must be okay with field work in all weather conditions, lifting 15-20 lbs, and operating a kayak.
Great Communicator – You’ll be working with city staff, contractors, and the public, so professional and friendly interactions are a must!
Licensed to Drive – A valid Class D Minnesota driver’s license with a good driving record is required.
Field-Ready – Ability to adapt to both office and field work
