Position Overview The Office of Graduate & Postdoctoral Affairs (GPA) seeks a creative, reliable, and self‑motivated Digital & Social Media Assistant to support strategic communications that elevate the visibility of KU’s graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.The assistant will develop and publish content for Instagram and LinkedIn highlighting GTA, GRA, and GA achievements, promoting awards and fellowships, and increasing engagement with GPA’s digital presence in coordination with the GPA Director of Communications & Professional Development and other GPA staff. The assistant will have access to additional training to ensure full compliance with KU Branding and Marketing policies and procedures. This is a fully onsite position located within the GPA office in Strong Hall reporting to the Vice Provost for Graduate & Postdoctoral Affairs. The assistant will work approximately 15 hours per week in the GPA office. The Vice Provost and assistant will develop a mutually agreed upon work schedule. Job Description 25% Content Creation & Storytelling:
Produce engaging content showcasing
Graduate student and postdoctoral research
GTA/GRA/GA contributions to KU mission
Fellowships, awards, and recognitions
GPA programs, workshops, and events
Graduate Alumni Advisory Board activities
Graduate Alumni accomplishments
Create graphics, short videos, interviews, and features tailored to Instagram and LinkedIn.
Maintain a consistent content calendar aligned with office priorities.
25% Engagement & Analytics:
Increase GPA’s social media engagement and visibility.
Monitor traffic, impressions, follower growth, and interaction trends.
Provide weekly analytics updates and recommend strategies for increased reach.
25% Communications Support
Assist GPA Staff
Drafting and scheduling posts
Preparing digital assets
Promoting signature programs such as 3MT, CGRS, and Mentoring Workshops
Gathering photos, quotes, and stories during in‑person events
Maintain organized digital media and content archives.
25% Collaboration & Reporting
Check in weekly with the Vice Provost to discuss progress and upcoming content.
Collaborate closely with the Director of Communications & Professional Development on messaging and branding consistency.
Work in-office alongside GPA staff as part of the unit’s communications operations.
Required Qualifications
Must be a current KU student meeting minimum enrollment requirements for student hourly employees.
Previous coursework or training in digital marketing, journalism, multimedia storytelling, communications, or related fields as demonstrated in application materials.
Strong writing, editing, and communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
Previous work experience creating digital or social media content as demonstrated in application materials.
Previous work experience with Instagram and LinkedIn best practices as shown in application materials.
Strong organizational and time‑management skills as indicated by application materials.
Experience working independently and taking initiative, as evidenced in application materials.
Availability to work onsite in the GPA office during scheduled hours.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous volunteer or paid experience in social media management, content creation, or digital marketing.
Experience using tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, CapCut, or similar platforms.
Experience interviewing students and faculty for stories and features.
Interest in research communication, graduate education, or science storytelling.
Position Requirements During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments). Employment Conditions
Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
