HR CPO/Director Bernstein Shur is seeking a strategic Human Resources leader to serve as a highly engaged partner in the firm’s continued growth and organizational development. This role may be filled at either the Director or Chief People Officer level, depending on experience and qualifications. Bernstein Shur is a respected regional law firm with more than 220 professionals and a long-standing presence across Northern New England. This leadership role will help drive the firm’s strategic plan by continuing to strengthen and modernize the HR function in support of a dynamic, high-performing professional services environment. The position reports to the CEO and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Job Requirements Director Level
Minimum of 8 years of progressive Human Resources experience
Master’s degree required; JD or comparable terminal degree preferred
Chief People Officer Level
10–15 years of Human Resources experience, including at least 5 years in an executive leadership role
JD or other relevant terminal degree required
Key Capabilities
Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to foster strong connections within leadership teams and between senior professionals and operational team members, and to influence at all levels of the organization
Demonstrated success partnering with attorneys and other senior professionals in a professional services environment (law firm experience strongly preferred)
Proven experience developing and executing talent acquisition and retention strategies
Deep understanding of aligning business strategy with Human Resources initiatives
Experience in policy development, governance, and compliance
Strong change management capabilities and a thoughtful, measured approach to complex challenges
Experience managing and optimizing HRIS platforms; familiarity with HiBob strongly preferred
A commitment to delivering a high level of internal and external client service.
Job Structure Location and Work Structure This position is based in Portland, Maine, with periodic travel to New Hampshire as needed. A hybrid work arrangement may be considered; however, consistent in-person presence in both Maine and New Hampshire offices is expected. Compensation
Director: $150,000 – $200,000
Chief People Officer: $200,000 – $300,000
