The Director of Cultivation (DoC) is a dynamic role, responsible for managing all operations of cultivation from propagation through harvest in a commercial cannabis facility with 8,000 sqft of flowering canopy. This is a complex position that requires a deep understanding of crop management across varied growing media, environmental control systems, cannabis morphology, fertigation systems, and irrigation strategy. The DoC will report into the VP of Cultivation. Responsibilities:
Oversee cultivation, nursery, IPM, and processing teams to ensure all departments are working cohesively to achieve deadlines and adhere to the production schedule
Strong leadership of cultivation and harvest teams; developing managers technical and soft skills, motivating technicians, and instilling accountability
Collaborate with VP of Cultivation to continue implementing new cultivars, and calibrate the cultivation production schedule to meet sales objectives
Track all cultivation and post-harvest KPI’s, analyzing environmental and substrate monitors to make data driven decisions.
Use an array of software to collect data, monitor KPI’s, and set data-driven performance goals for cultivation/harvest managers/teams
Partner with department leaders to forecast workflow and labor demand, maintaining appropriate number of staff to guarantee deadlines are met
Troubleshoot all plant health issues, mitigate pest/pathogen pressure through rigid IPM practices, maintaining economic thresholds while upholding quality standards
Continuous research and development of best cultivation processes and operational efficiencies, improve existing SOP’s and generate new ones to maintain streamlined production
Constant refinement of best cultivation and post-harvest practices specific to individual cultivars
Maintain an extremely high standard of quality in cultivation/processing practices and post-harvest final products, emphasizing cleanliness and exceptional attention to detail
Work alongside the General Manager and Facilities Department to ensure infrastructure repairs and projects are completed in a timely manner and in-line with cultivation’s vision
Enforce all cultivation regulatory standards in compliance with the Cannabis Regulatory Agency
Ensure all areas of cultivation production are using low impact practices to the best of our ability to reduce waste, innovate and improve processes to reduce our carbon footprint
Any other tasks assigned by the VP of Cultivation
Qualifications:
An effective leader with a healthy balance of firm accountability and empathy, you can make the hard decisions objectively and nurture a sense of ownership with employees at all levels
Detail oriented is an understatement, but you don't let the particulars detract from the bigger picture
Able to analyze processes and information, identify problems and trends, and develop effective solutions and strategies
3+ years of experience managing commercial cultivation teams in a licensed facility with over 5,000sqft of flowery canopy
5+ years of hands-on cultivation experience growing a wide variety of cultivars
Strong familiarity with commercial cultivation infrastructure, environmental control systems, fertigation systems, IPM strategies and post-harvest quality standards
Proven success cultivating truly high quality cannabis at scale while maintaining economically viable COGS and revenue generation
Adept in project management and workflow software, spreadsheets, developing and tracking KPI’s, inventory management, labor forecasting, and efficient task delegation
Bachelor's degree in plant science, business, or management, or 3+ years equivalent experience as a Cultivation Manager in a commercial cannabis facility
