The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Chief Geologist - Open Pit to lead the geological operations function at a large-scale gold mining operation in Northwestern Ontario. Reporting directly to the Mine Manager, this role will oversee geological modelling, grade control, reconciliation, geological data management, and the ongoing development of the geological operations team. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and operational effectiveness of geological processes that directly support production planning and mining operations. The successful candidate will work closely with mine operations, technical services, and leadership teams to optimize ore control, resource reconciliation, and operational performance while maintaining compliance with industry standards and best practices. Key Responsibilities
Lead and oversee all geological operations and geological modelling activities for the open pit operation
Provide technical oversight and guidance related to grade control, geological modelling, and ore reconciliation
Supervise geological analysis, data interpretation, and modelling activities
Ensure accurate reconciliation between mine production, mill performance, reserves, and resource models
Manage geological databases and oversee data quality for operational and reconciliation purposes
Analyze geological and production data to support operational decision-making
Develop, implement, and improve geological procedures, policies, and operational standards
Recommend alternative methods, procedures, and technical improvements to optimize performance and efficiencies
Participate in geological and mining technical task forces and continuous improvement initiatives
Ensure compliance with industry standards, operational requirements, and reporting obligations
Oversee preparation and review of technical reports and geological documentation
Provide geological information related to ground control and operational issues
Lead, mentor, coach, and develop a team of geological professionals and technical staff
Support staffing, succession planning, performance management, and technical development within the department
Work collaboratively with mine operations, technical services, engineering, and leadership teams
Assist in maintaining safe, productive, and cost-effective mining operations
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline
Minimum 10 years of experience within underground and/or open pit mining operations
Strong leadership experience within an active production mining environment
Extensive experience with geological modelling, grade control, reconciliation, and geological data management
Experience working with geological and resource estimation software and database systems
Strong understanding of mine geology, ore control, and operational geology practices
Experience acting as a Qualified Person (QP) for NI 43-101 Technical Reports is considered a strong asset
Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and all levels of an organization

Compensation
Base salary targeted around $180,000, with flexibility for exceptional candidates
Annual bonus target of 20%
