**PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS**

These positions typically work in an indoor, courtroom and/or office setting. Typical duties require the ability to sit and/or stand and concentrate for extended periods; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; hearing to understand conversations when background noise is present and to communicate with the public and court staff.

Working Environment: Work is performed in the courtroom and related court facilities and includes but is not limited to contact with judges, staff attorneys, and the public. The position requires the ability to concentrate and deliver interpreting services in a busy and fast-paced environment. Courtroom interpreting requires the ability to adjust to speakers with differing voices and accents at varying rates of speed. Interpreters come into contact with a wide variety of people from differing educational and economic backgrounds.

Work may include exposure to disturbing evidence and testimony. Graphic photographs of traumatic events such as murder or domestic violence, evidence such as syringes, drugs, chemicals, bodily fluids, and stained clothing. Monterey County Courthouse Completed 1878 

The military and social capital of Alta California during Spanish and Mexican rule, the town of Monterey naturally became the county seat when the 27 original counties were formed in, 1850. But when it was learned that the railroad was to go through the valley and not along the coast, the government center was moved to Salinas. After the house used as a courthouse burned, this much larger brick Victorian building was commissioned. The courthouse remained in use while the current one was being constructed around it, and then was demolished. Today a courtyard, lily pond, and commemorative sculpture occupy the site.

The Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, invites applications from Spanish/English Interpreters certified by the State of California who are willing to work for the San Francisco Superior Court on a permanent, full-time basis. Work is performed in an office and courtroom environment involving continuous contact with judges, staff, attorneys, litigants, community groups, and the general public.

**Position Overview**

Employees serving in this position interpret from and into Spanish and English using simultaneous and consecutive modes at court proceedings and for other court-related departments at the direction of the court; make sight translations for the benefit of the court of documents including, but not limited to, court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statement forms, and other documents; interpret for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court-related departments at the direction of the court; interpret between languages in court proceedings; bring to the court's attention any items that may impede the interpreters' performance; research and understand legal terminology used in court and functions of the court; receive daily calendar assignments from the San Francisco Court Interpreter Supervisor and accurately complete daily activity logs, or other documentation as required; and perform other language interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing sight translation of short documents.

Physical Requirements: Sit for extended periods; frequently stand for extended periods and frequently walk, bend, stoop, lift, and stretch; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination as required for the specific language used; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication, litigants and the public; use of office equipment as required by the assignment.

**Required Qualifications**

One year of the equivalent of full-time experience acting as an interpreter-translator in a courtroom or in a business environment.

**Initial Screening**

Under general supervision, Court Interpreters provide an essential public service, assisting LEP: (Limited English Proficiency) parties, witnesses, defendants, attorneys, court personnel, and the public by performing a wide variety of language interpretation activities for court-related proceedings.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Court Interpreter is a single journey-level classification. Employees in this classification perform consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings and other related interpreting services as needed and other duties as assigned. **Special Note **: The Superior Court of California, County of Sonoma is recruiting to establish an eligibility list specifically to appoint part-time intermittent court interpreter positions. Court interpreters provide an essential public service, giving assistance to non-English speaking parties. They perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as needed basis for the court and for parties to proceedings, other court personnel and the public, and perform other job related duties as the rate prescribed above for four-hour and eight-hour assignments. Employment is for no predetermined period of time.

For an intermittent part-time interpreter to become a part-time interpreter and eligible for benefits, they must work 50% time or more for six consecutive months before becoming eligible for benefits. Further, they must maintain an average of 50% time or more during each succeeding six-month period to be eligible to continue to have benefits, subject to the specific benefit plan permitting. If an intermittent part-time employee becomes eligible for benefits and then fails to continue to be eligible because they have not worked the requisite 50% time, they shall be ineligible for benefits for a period of at least six months.
